-------------------- February 10, 2005 NBA most improved players Originally started as the Comeback Player of the Year Award in the 1980-81 season, this award category was intended to recognize a high caliber player who had lost his touch for some time (for a year or more) but then regained his playing prowess. However as three of the five winners won it for unexemplary reasons, the league decided to change the award to Most Improved Player. Michael Ray Richardson and Bernard King won it for coming back from drug problems and Gus Williams won it after he had sat out the previous season because of contract disputes. For a player to be aligible for the Most Improved Player Award they have to show significant improvement from their previous season(s), no time off from the league is required.
