The award honors the continent's top basketball player. For the year 2001 Peja was the torch bearer. Memphis' Pau Gasol and Dirk Nowitzki were 3rd and 2nd respectively. Predicting from the current standpoint however, Dik Nowitzki will get a string of those before his career is over. Keeping that note, Captain Dirk will also be the best European player yet in the NBA when he's done. Notice I said "from the current standpoint". That's because you never know.
