<< Previous Next >> -------------------- February 05, 2003 Bald and shiny The (almost) 40 year old bald guy can still ball. Not only his dome shines like a star but so does his game. Truth however is that Michael Jordan shouldn't have to shine as much these days. But nobody minds. He's worked hard enough to surround himself with studs like Brendan Haywood, Bryan Russell, Kwame Brown, Larry Hughes and Jerry Stackhouse, who was injured for the game. When Jordan against the Cleveland Cavaliers and in Washington D.C needs to rev up his 40 year old engine for 27 buckets and 8 dishes for 43 minutes, something is wrong. We choose to liken it to your dad coming home from work and having to go rake the leaves in the yard, even though he had told you to take care of that. Basically MJ wants to get to the playoffs and he wants it more than his teammates. Sure MJ was getting a lot of touches, but they were playing Cleveland. All the other players should've just been fired up that they wouldn't have time to get him the ball. And as long as it was all merry, he wouldn't have minded. 93-84 in the Wizards' favor. Big man in Denver The headline says it all. There's only one big man in Denver since the trade that sent Nick Van Exel and Raef Lafrenz to Dallas. The one and only Juwan Howard. Well paid and well schooled. No we're not talking about the college degree he received on time (despite leaving school early) or the academic programs he runs for kids. Rather the number of NBA forwards who have had their way with him on the court. We can still remember those days in Washington D.C when we kept wishing he would just one day get frustrated at the heckling and take it all out on that night's opponent. He took it out on the fans. Fair enough they were the one heckling not the opponents. All we wanted was a glimpse of desire and inspiration, no matter what the final result. As long as we could tell there was an effort a win or loss was irrelevant. Now it's clear we should have never lowered the standards. For doing so we got nothing at all. Now he's in Denver and though we got (fanfare) Jordan, we do wish him the best. So last night against the Chicago Bulls he was the way we had always wanted - even though chris Whitney had a lot to do with the end result. But that's what happens when you actually try. Juwan Howard pumped in 30 points, ripped 9 rebounds and passed for 8 extra baskets. Close to a triple double. Chris Whitney who played in Washington with Juwan Howard sunk the 3-pointer that sent the game to overtime. His foot was on line but it was ruled a 3. Maybe it was so Juwan Howard's effort wouldn't be wasted. Whatever the reason, we like the result. Jalen Rose, Howard's Fabulous Five buddy at Michigan State (along with Chris Webber) scored 20 points but only made 5 of 22 shots. 100-102 Denver. << Previous Next >> Back to archives main Back to top
