With the coming of the new year, dawns the arrival of the birth of a new NBA franchise. Scheduled to begin play in the 2004-05 season, the Charlotte Bobcats will be the 30th member of the Association. Robert "Bob" Johnson founder of the Black Entertainment Television (BET) won the ownership rights to the new franchise against a Larry Bird-led group after the NBA's expansion committee voted in favor of them - though many, including yours truly, for various marketing reasons, feel Larry Bird's group never really had a legit shot at the Charlotte expansion. Johnson became the first African-American bilionaire in 2002 after selling BET to Viacom for $3 billion. As of 2003 he was ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the world's 500 richest persons. Part of the team's executive team is comprised of team President and Chief Operating Officer Ed Tapscott, and former Wizards head coach Bernie Bickerstaff as General Manager and head coach. The name Bobcat came up as a result of fan balloting. The practice adopted by most expansions in the last ten years (Hornets, Raptors and Wizards-renaming). Before that, team owners or executives used to pick a name to reflect the team location's history (76ers, Knicks, Rockets). The Bobcats will play in the Charlotte Colisseum as did the Hornets before them until their new arena opens in the Fall of 2005. Bob's brag Bob Johnson's Black Entertainment Television features many music videos of urban recording artists bragging about their fame and fortunes. We thought what if Mr Johnson decided to put out his own album? That led us to come up with a fictitious list of titles that might appear on his LP, titled "Bob's Cats": 1. 10 figga n***a 2. Too legit for denial, featuring David Stern 3. A long time coming 4. Still got that bread, (wifee ain't got it all) 5. True money, (move over Jordan) 6. Rob runs the city, (know this Larry) 7. Jet' em up Bernie 8. Southeast we ready 9. Crush you in the Colisseum 10. B.O.B.C.A.T.S 11.
