For whom the spoils

The last remaining open arenas have been closed down for the season, and as always not without crowning a champion. In this case the unlikely Detroit Pistons.

To all of you Pistons fans, we know your team won, but don't over do it by claiming you knew this would be the outcome. The Lakers were the rightful favorites (but not the rightful champions). You might have had high hopes for Detroit and knew they had some clout but don't say you were sure of a victory because you weren't - at least not until the series began.

The Pistons' win has spurred a feeling of well being and contentment in the Metropolitan Detroit area. If you happened to have spent some time anywhere around there, you might notice that Detroit and its surrounding areas are dettached. Many suburb residents do not wish to be connected to the Motor City.

"I'm not from down there" is something you might here from a suburban dweller.

The city of Detroit is often accused of being, dirty, run down, dangerous and scary by out of towners. In fact a stroll through many parts of the city will have you glaring at countless abandoned buildings. The reason? former residents and business owners having deserted the city for the 'burbs.

While the Pistons' play has many times been associated with the blue collar nature of Detroit residents (a favorable coincidence) It has to be noted that the Pistons' headquarters, namely The Palace, is located in relatively plush Auburn Hills, whose driving distance from the "D" would register toll on any turnpike.

The dillema here - if you can follow what I'm trying to say - is who deserves the bulk of the rewards (in terms of pride) for the team's accomplishment.

Common wisdom would suggest the city after which it is named after. But those fans aren't the most prominent guests at the games. Rather the suburbanites.

The championship parade (as many other events held in the Motor City) had many out of towners braving the city's reputation to have the chance to catch a glimpse of the new NBA kings.

It turns out that the Pistons' feat served as a bridge between the city and its peripheries. It brought everyone on the same page - cheering for Detroit - not to mention spotting Laker fans. The Pistons' mastery of the Lakers brought that feel good atmosphere only ultimate success could bring to any worry; it dissipated troubles and lightened conversations.
