Capacity: 22,076 Year opened: 1988 Events hosted: Detroit Pistons and Detroit Shock basketball, concerts. Operators: Palace Sports and entertainment. Naming rights: The name "palace" is in reference to the lavish nature of the arena which is located in the plush Detroit suburb of Auburn Hills. There are no naming sponsors. Championships celebrated: NBA - 3 (Chuck Daly 1989, 1990, Larry Brown 2004). WNBA - 1 (2003) Previous venues: Olympia stadium (Detroit), Cobo Center (Detroit), Pontiac Silverdome 1978-1988 (Pontiac). Owners' names: Fred Zollner (1941-1974), Bill Davidson (1974-present). Comments: Founded in Fort Wayne, it's oldest existing franchise in the NBA. In 1957, owner Fred Zollner moved the team to Detroit, a much larger city that did not have an NBA franchise; the Detroit Gems had folded after one season of existence (they later became the Minneapolis Lakers, then the current Los Angeles Lakers). -------------------- Bulls >> Back to Arenas list © 2001, 2005 H o o p s C o r n e r . c o m, All rights reserved Terms Of Service Privacy policy Contact |
