MCI Center. . . . . . . . . 1997. . 20,674 tickets google link directions location build cost operators naming rights (picture) The MCI Center is a sports and entertainment arena in Washington, DC, named after telecommunications sponsor MCI (whose stylized logo continues to grace it). It opened on December 2, 1997 in downtown Washington, in Chinatown. Some complained that the building's construction, by closing off a block of G St, corrupted the historic L'Enfant layout of the Washington city streets. However, the MCI Center not only became a popular venue for sports and concerts, but helped to revitalize the "Gallery Place/Chinatown" neighborhood into becoming one of the prime sites for commercial development in Washington. The MCI Center is the home arena of the NBA Washington Wizards, the NHL Washington Capitals, and the Georgetown University basketball team, the Hoyas. It seats 20,000, and is also a major venue for over 200 concerts and other events each year. The arena is owned by Washington Sports & Entertainment (which owns the Wizards and the Capitals), Opened December 2, 1973 US Airways Arena (originally known as the Capital Centre, also popularly known as the USAir Arena) was an indoor arena located in Landover, Maryland in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Completed in 1973, the arena sat 18,756 for basketball. The arena was the home of the Washington Bullets of the NBA from 1973-1997, the Washington Capitals of the NHL from 1974-1997 and the men's basketball team of Georgetown University from 1980-1997. The three all left for the MCI Center when it opened in early 1997. The Washington/Maryland Commandos of the Arena Football League also called the arena home from 1987 to 1990.
